MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT:

FEED-A-FAMILY

At Christmas

"...starting with a pallet of 600 flat cardboard boxes waiting to be unfolded and taped for Feed-A-Family on December 21st. It takes a couple of trucks to pick up items we need to purchase. Freezer space for 300 turkeys, and an equal number of boxes of stuffing mix, 3,000 pounds of potatoes, 1,500 pounds of apples, 300 pounds each of bacon and butter, 3,600 eggs, gelatinous towers of peanut butter, jelly and canned cranberry sauce, 300 packages of fresh Hawaiian dinner rolls, and a mountain of cereal boxes and candy.

It takes an angelic host of volunteers to build the boxes, to carry donated food from the church, school, and parish offices to the

Parish Center, to fill each box carefully, and then to carry them gently to cars on a cold Saturday morning. The loading is directed by dedicated mega elves: Linda Parreira, and Heather & Mitch Derenzo. Our faithful Archangels: Annette Belisle, Laura Chacon, and Nik Lushenko will welcome each car, each grandma, kid, and backseat dog as they check them in. At the end of the morning, a mountain of cardboard has to be recycled, and 60 tables need to be folded and put away."

SHARING GOD'S BOUNTY

I had the opportunity to join the organized group that is "Sharing God's Bounty" (SGB); an energetic and effective people that not only create the meals, but also serve our community in need.

This afternoon the menu to go consisted on a delicious warm spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread, salad, fruit and dessert. But, that wasn't all, at the door SGB organized tables with goods to give away: can food, bottle water/juice/energy-protein drinks, snacks, produce (from the gardens of our parishioners), toiletry bags, and the special bar soap wrap knitted by our "Stitches for Good " Ministry. There was also a nurse (parishioner) consultant available.

What an afternoon of giving!!!

If you have the opportunity to help SGB check our web page for more information, and remember to donate to the bins available at the Parish vestibules.

“I have tried other products that worked fine, but this one is certainly the best of them all. It brings efficiency to a new level of simplicity.”

Pope's 12-day apostolic journey to
Asia and Oceania

Pope Francis longest Mission trip

He will fly a staggering 20,000 miles round trip to visit Catholic communities in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor, and Singapore from Sept. 2–13.

The pope’s tour of Southeast Asia and Oceania is his first international journey of the year, following a period of slowed travel due to his age and health issues.

Pope Francis, who will turn 88 in December, is traveling with his medical team of a doctor and two nurses. In addition, the pope’s secretaries are also traveling with him to Asia to provide extra support, which is a novelty for this trip.

MINISTRY SPOTLIGHT:

QUILTING FOR A CAUSE

A group interested on developing community and service through the art of QUILTING.

Under the guidance of Mrs. Santarosa and Mrs. Slavik the group has created beautiful and unique quilts that are distributed between the ones in need. After blessing them some quilts go to the Xavier Ministry at our Parish, as well as other places in need like Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home.

Greetings of peace from the Coalition for Racial Equity team. Our world is in deep need of peace and reconciliation and we all can be a part of the healing. As we begin the busy holiday season, we hope you will make time for reflection and quiet. This is also a season we spend time with family, friends and neighbors. Our fall book discussion is a book that inspires us to love with more compassion, hope you will join us.

Our 5th Cohort will complete the final program in the series Faith & Racial Justice in November. Our Sacramento members are joined by participants from St. Ignatius Parish in Portland, Oregon. We continue to have thoughtful discussions as we discern action steps to address racism in our communities. Stay tuned for updates from this team.

Kelly Herbelin-Farrar

SI Parishioner, JustFaith Grad

As a working mom, I didn't think I had time for the JustFaith series. I'm grateful I took the time; it changed my life and the life of my family for the better. I no longer believe that being a "color blind" good person is the goal. I'm now working towards true equity for all of God's people.

Be ready to act with love

This October, the Catholic Church in the United States is renewing its National Catholic Mental Health Campaign (NCMHC), encouraging all people to become more aware of the issues, eliminate the stigmas around mental illness, and seek creative ways to journey with those who struggle. This can be done now through personal and community accompaniment and by advocating for effective and compassionate public policy around mental health and wellness. As Pope Francis says, "Caring for others is not just a skilled job but a real mission." Now is the time to step into this mission.

NOVENA

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE VIRGIN MARY

The Latin Church believes that Mary was raised from the dead and assumed body and soul into heaven where she is glorified and crowned as Queen. She represents our hope and the promise that all of us will one day be raised to new life. The old will pass away and only the new will remain. And on that day the promises made by God to our ancestors in the faith will be fulfilled. The heavens will ring with those terrible and awesome words: Now have salvation and power come, and the Kingdom of our God And the authority of his Anointed One. For God’s dwelling is with the human race, for we will dwell with him for all eternity.
